Ayer quits May stores review

N.W. Ayer & Partners, New York, quit the review for the $60 million account of May Department Stores Co., St. Louis. Ayer's departure comes two weeks after Merkley Newman Harty, New York, withdrew from the pitch. Insiders say May's executives want a retail-driven campaign, rather than a brand-building effort. W.B. Doner & Co., Southfield, Mich., and Richards Group, Dallas, are the remaining contenders. A decision is expected this week.
