Back-to-school boosts online spending

Online retail sales climbed 5% to $4.2 billion in August, assisted by annual back-to-school shopping activity, according to a monthly retail survey by the National Retail Federation, Forrester Research, and Greenfield Online. According to the NRF/Forrester Online Retail Index, 15 million households shopped online in August, spending an average of $280 per person. Apparel and footwear were two of the largest-growing, small-item categories posting the greatest sales activity.
