"The job is to drive the global growth strategy... it is essentially to get some real growth into the company through multinational global clients,'' Mr. Smith says. ``The way it works at the moment, 30% of Bates' income worldwide comes from clients we work for in five or more countries. My job is to turn that into 10 countries. We've tried to do that on a casual and haphazard basis. Now we have to try to get people focused."
Mr. Smith begins his appointment, which is for an indefinite period, in March. John Fawcett, George Patterson Bates national chief executive, will take on part of his work with the remainder spread around the agency's Australian offices.
