Bates China gets Shanghai GM account

Shanghai -- Bates China has won a $20 million integrated communications assignment from Shanghai General Motors to launch the Buick brand in mainland China, where bicycles far outnumber automobiles.

Bates beat two GM roster agencies, McCann-Erickson Worldwide and DMB&B, to the account, marking the first time that Bates has worked with GM.

"We are proud to have been chosen by SGM, and salute Bates China for its win in an intensive six-month pitching process," said Michael Bungey, chairman and CEO, Bates Worldwide in New York.

No date has been set yet for the marketing campaign's launch.

SGM is the $1.6 billion General Motors joint venture with the Shanghai Automobile Industrial Corporation to build and launch the Buick brand in China.
