Bates names Smith to lead charge for multinational business

Ian Smith, 42, managing director of George Paterson Bates, Sydney, was named president-international at Bates Worldwide, New York. He will head the development of new business from multinational clients, particularly in areas such as package goods that were closed to the now-independent Bates when it and Saatchi & Saatchi were co-owned by Cordiant. Saatchi is a major Procter & Gamble Co. roster agency. Mr. Smith, who assumes his new post March 1, will be based in Bates Worldwide's New York headquarters.
