McCann is restructuring its Detroit office to mirror GM's switch to brand management. Gunnar will head the GM account - the agency's largest client worldwide - in partnership with Sean Fitzpatrick, who will continue in his role as a worldwide executive VP and director of worldwide accounts.
Schalk, 56, began his advertising career in Germany with the agency TEAM in 1967. He eventually became managing partner at TEAM, which merged with BBDO in 1973. While retaining his post as chairman of the BBDO Germany Group, he eventually became a worldwide officer at BBDO. In 1981 he rose to president of BBDO International, and was named president and COO of BBDO Worldwide in 1986. In 1990, he decided to leave the international agency business to return to Germany.
McCann-Erickson Germany has billings in excess of $400m. Schalk joins Wilmot, who is already member of McCann's worldwide management board.
