Cingular Wireless, Atlanta, tapped BBDO
Worldwide, Atlanta and New York, to handle its estimated $300 million account. Cingular is the merged wireless operations of SBC Communications and BellSouth Corp. SBC agency GSD&M, Austin, Texas, and BellSouth shop WestWayne, Atlanta, previously handled the work. BBDO was thought to be out of the running as of late the week of Oct. 9, according to people close to the situation. Speculation was rampant that the two incumbent agencies would share duties for the account. The decision was to have been made Oct. 13, but was delayed until Oct. 16. "It was a very, very tight race and that was why the decision was delayed for a day because all three of them had incredibly creative campaigns," said a person familiar with the selection, adding, "BBDO has an excellent record of launching and establishing new brands."
