Bell Atlantic assigns VDT channels

Billing it as a significant step closer to "the country's first commercial video dial-tone network," Bell Atlantic distributed channel numbers to video providers on the Dover Township, N.J., system scheduled to start in September.

The distribution was handled lottery-style among the seven providers who had reserved space. Those providers include Rainbow Programing Holdings, which received channels 1 to 192; FutureVision of America Corp., which took channels 200 to 295; and Graff Pay-Per-View, which got channels 300 to 311.

Playboy Entertainment Group also reserved one channel, as did International TeleCommerce, which will offer home shopping. Two other providers, which declined to be identified, have also reserved one channel each. In all, 304 of the 384 channels available were assigned. Bell Atlantic is now accepting requests to fill the remaining channels on a first-come, first-served basis.
