Bell Atlantic eyes long distance

Published on .

Bell Atlantic filed applications to offer long-distance service in North Carolina, Florida, Illinois, South Carolina and Texas. Bell Atlantic said it will launch its new services with a ''strong marketing campaign'' once it wins approval from each of the state regulators. To compete in the markets, the company will resell services of already existing facilities-based interexchange carriers. Under the new law established by the telecommunications bill, the baby Bells, cannot offer long-distance service within its territory until they've a handful of technical requirements, including number portablity and switch access. Bell Atlantic plans to meet these requirements and offer long-distance service within its region by yearend.
