Bertelsmann, Daimler-Benz form Internet, intranet venture

Two major German companies are combining their efforts to market Internet services. Media giant Bertelsmann and Daimler-Benz subsidiary Debis Systemhaus have formed a 50:50 joint venture to build up their Internet and Intranet business both within and outside Germany..

Debis has acquired 50% of Bertelsmann subsidiary MediaWays, which operates the dial-up access to America Online in Germany. Bertelsmann, which claims to have the largest and fastest Internet service in Germany, jointly owns with America Online the European online service AOL.

Debis and Bertelsmann plan to expand their Internet services outside Germany. They intend to operate a major trans Atlantic network.
