Bess named FCB president

Foote, Cone & Belding named Ron Bess, the president of its Chicago office, to be president of the worldwide agency, a new post, and named Leo Burnett USA's Brian Williams as the new president of FCB, Chicago. The Bess appointment was expected.

Mr. Williams, an exec VP-managing director in Burnett's Chicago office, will assume his FCB post May 11. Since December, Mr. Williams had been part of the four-person team leading one of Burnett's new "business units" (responsible for accounts such as Kraft Foods, Hallmark Cards, Dairy Management, Dean Witter, Discover & Co. and J.M. Smucker Co.). No successor was immediately named by Burnett. Mr. Bess joined FCB in 1996 when FCB parent True North Communications acquired Chicago ad agency Bayer Bess Vanderwarker. Mr. Bess reports to FCB Chairman-CEO Brendan Ryan, who is based at FCB headquarters in New York.
