Big gains seen for obesity products

Published on .

Sales of products to treat obesity will climb to $5.9 billion in the year 2000, 60% over 1994 levels, Irvine, Calif.-based Medical Data International predicted in a report published today. In 1994, prescription drugs represented 3% of the total obesity management product market in the U.S., while weight-loss programs totaled 83%, said MDI. In the year 2000, however, the use of prescription drugs is forecast to increase to more than 30% of the total market and weight-loss programs will decrease to 58%.
