BOZELL ANNOUNCES LAYOFFS IN CREATIVE DEPARTMENT

Published on .

True North Communications Group's Bozell Group, New York, said March 21 it laid off 11 people from its 84-person creative department on March 15. The move comes as the agency held a party on March 19 to debut Tony Granger, who joined the company as executive creative director in December 2000 from co-creative director from TBWA/Hunt/Lascaris in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Since his appointment, "Bozell has taken a hard look at its creative department and decided to restructure the department to further improve the quality of our creative product," a spokeswoman said. Copywriters and art directors were among those let go. The cuts were performance-driven, according to people close to the situation, and didn't include anyone at the partner level or higher.

Ironically, the party for Mr. Granger took place on the day True North announced its merger deal with Interpublic Group of Cos. -- Kate MacArthur
