What strikes me as the most simple yet dramatic and probably effective advertising in years is hanging these days high above the marvelous, echoing marble space of Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan where they're doing improvements and refurbishing. And where some very smart folks indeed are renting out the walls to equally smart folks at Barron's and Gap for Kids. On the south side of the room, for its entire length, hangs a facsimile of a U.S. Treasury bill plugging Barron's. And on the opposite, north wall, an ad for the Gap. Just think of it, how many young media planners and buyers hurry through that space twice a day, coming and going from their homes in Westchester and Connecticut? Captive audience? I'll say.

Just seems like yesterday that Harry Evans was starting it up, but current Editor in Chief Tom Wallace of Conde Nast Traveler will be celebrating the magazine's 10th anniversary with its May issue. Which Publisher Lisa Henriques says will be the biggest in the book's history with 216 ad pages.

Smart move by Ed Kosner at Esquire promoting Randy Rothenberg to edit director. Randy's current cover story, all about cocktails and music and clothes and cigars and women is a reminder of when the going was good. He's a former ad columnist for The New York Times and writes books (good ones) in his spare time.

Street & Smith sports magazines (part of Conde Nast) and Mayor Giuliani host a June 20 reception at New York's Gracie Mansion to promote the Mickey Mantle Organ Donor Foundation.

Mother Jones, that sprightly and enduringly left-wing mag, is booming on the circulation front (that's just west of Barcelona where the Loyalists are still resisting Franco!). ABC has their new circ at 145,000. Ad pages healthy as well, up 20% for year to date over the equivalent '96 count.

Diane Olshin says Parenting's Baby Talk mag first-quarter ad pages are up 19% over last year's.

Let's hear it for Dana L. Fields, now Wenner Media's group publisher for all three titles.
