Steve Forbes chairs this year's big Dec. 9 fundraising cocktail and dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan to benefit JOB (Just One Break). This is their 49th annual gala to help disabled people find jobs. The honoree is John Hockenberry of NBC, the music is by Peter Duchin, the corporate backers include Capital Cities/ABC, NBC, Colgate-Palmolive, Hilton, Marriott, Nabisco, Viacom, Simon & Schuster, Milbank, Tweed, CIT Group, Cushman & Wakefield. Automotive News tosses a cocktail party at the Knickerbocker Club in New York Dec. 18 honoring top sales manager Tom Collins, who's retiring after 28 years of bringing in the bucks.

Joel Kessler says his Southwest Art based in Houston is booming. November ad pages were up 31% over last year and December was 13% ahead.

From American Express Publishing, Dan Brewster reports ad dollars for the first three quarters were up 26% over the period a year earlier. Dan says ad pages were also up more than 15%. The titles are Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine and Departures, "with lots more happening down the pike." Time Inc. took over management four years ago.

Publisher Ann Jackson of Time Inc.'s In Style says their August issue, with Goldie and daughter on the cover, is the first ever to deliver over a million net paids. Ann raises the rate base in January to 800,000.

Roger, we hardly knew ye. Roger Antin left as publisher of Bride's magazine the same week I wrote so highly of him.

Audubon Magazine, as beautiful as its subject matter, hired Maria Eliason from Avenue to attract more luxury goods marketers to Audubon which, incidentally, was up 46% in ad revenue for the November/December issue vs. a year ago.

The December issue of Glamour with 152 ad pages was 61% ahead of last year and the largest issue of the mag since '86.

They have a new associate publisher at Bon Appetit. He's Dan Lagani, who'd been at New Woman.

Jim Kahn says despite the cold, golf is booming. That's Golf as in his Golf mag (Times Mirror). The current issue is the biggest November ever in ad pages, up 17% in pages over last year and 24% ahead in bucks.
