British environmental paper folds after first issue

Published on .

LONDON--The Planet, the U.K. national newspaper that focused on environmental issues, closed down Wednesday, three days after its first issue was published.

Clifford Hards, the paper's publisher and owner of a travel company, said the paper's content did not satisfy his own personal criteria.

"Sales of the paper were sufficient to suggest that break-even could have been established quickly in line with our original plans, and we were satisfied with distribution and circulation," Mr. Hards said. "There are no financial difficulties and all our contractual and financial obligations will be met in full."
