Brown & Williamson ad targets Disney shareholders

Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., in a page ad in the Nov. 12 edition of The Wall Street Journal, claims it's been "defamed" by Walt Disney Co.'s Touchstone Pictures. Touchstone is the producer of "The Insider," the movie touted as the true story of industry whistle-blower and former B&W executive Jeffrey Wigand. In its ad--created in-house and titled "An Open Letter to Disney Shareholders" and signed by Mick Brookes, B&W chairman-CEO--the company said incidents depicted in the movie that show the tobacco company threatening Mr. Wigand are false. A spokesman said the company is conducting research with an eye toward filing a defamation suit.
