BSkyB, OzEmail set up Web ad venture

Published on .

The U.K.'s BSkyB, Europe's largest pay TV company, has signed a joint venture agreement with Australian Internet service firm OzEmail, to provide an international advertising service on the Internet.

Details of the technology and the scheme's strategy will be announced at its launch in New York on December 3, but the venture plans to "deliver Internet advertising opportunities targeted at local audiences accessing Web sites regardless of where those sites are hosted."

Each party will make an equal financial contribution to the joint venture; Elisabeth Murdoch, general manager-broadcasting at BSkyB, and Malcolm Turnbull, chairman of OzEmail, have been appointed co-chairmen.

"With global Internet advertising revenue expected to exceed $5 billion by the turn of the century, this new medium represents both a sizable and an exciting opportunity," said Mr. Turnbull.
