Burrell Communications Group added Mike de Maio as managing director-corporate operations, in a new position from president of Creative Alliance, Louisville, Ky. He will be one of five managing directors reporting to Tom Burrell, chairman. Mr. de Maio will be responsible for new business and administrative operations. He was earlier president of Lois/EJL, Chicago. He plans to leverage the nation's second-largest multicultural agency's knowledge of the urban market to pursue whole brand assignments."Tom Burrell is not going to walk away from what he's done over 30 years," said Mr. de Maio. That said, he believes the agency's urban marketing initiatives can be better leveraged to make tired general-market brands more relevant. "What makes that brand suddenly relevant?" he asked. "If you can understand the mindset that creates that particular affinity for the brand, you have a huge advantage -- you create a mindset about a product." The shop's other managing directors were also named. Fay Ferguson, to exec VP-managing director, marketing operations from exec VP-director of account management. In her new post she will be overseeing account management for Bacardi Ltd., McDonald's Corp., Procter & Gamble Co., Exxon/Mobil, Sears, Roebuck & Co., Kellogg Co., Nationwide Insurance Enterprise and Nestle. She will manage research, information services and strategic planning. McGhee Williams will be exec VP-managing director, marketing innovations from exec VP-general manager. Based in Atlanta, she will oversee the Coca-Cola Co., Verizon and Soft Sheen accounts as well as media, public relations, account planning and urban/youth initiatives. Alma Hopkins will become exec VP-managing director-creative innovations from exec VP-executive creative director. In October, the agency named Mike Faems exec VP-managing director-creative operations.
