The latest survey from CommerceNet and Nielsen Media Research found 73% of Web users look online for info on products, with the number one category being hardware/software, followed by cars. Only 15% report actually making a purchase online in the previous 30 days. Top reason consumers say they aren't buying: fear over security and privacy. The new survey found 23% of people in North America over the age of 16 had used the Net in the previous month, up 10% from the first survey in fall 1995. Women made up 42% of the users, up from 34% in 1995. The study also showed the Net is going mainstream: just 39% of users were professionals or managers, down from 50% in '95.
