(April 16, 2001) -- Campbell Soup Co., of Camden, N.J., said today it is splitting its North American operations into two units -- one for soup and the other for the rest of Campbell's business, including V-8 beverages and Pace and Prego sauces.

Martin Thrasher, 50, is leaving his post as president-Campbell North America, to "puruse other career opportunities," the company said, while Andrew Hughson, 46, becomes president of the soup division, reporting to Douglas Conant, who became CEO in January.

Campbell is searching for an executive to head the Beverages and Sauces Division. As part of the restructuring, Campbell is also shifting some functional responsibilities, including marketing services, into a newly formed "corporate matrix" organization.

"This new organizational alignment is designed to sharpen our focus on consumer marketing and competitive strategies for soup," said Mr. Conant, who called the soup business his top priority. -- Jack Neff
