Canceled cruise

A luxury liner packed with 600 ad industry executives was supposed to sail from New York harbor on the evening of Sept. 12 for the U.S. Marketing Forum, an annual three-day cruise and marketing conference. Instead, U.S. warships steamed in.

U.K.-based Richmond Events runs three different Marketing Forums each year, for the U.S., U.K. and Europe. Marketers attend the cruise at no charge and in exchange meet with marketing services providers in one-on-one sessions.

Last week, 400 senior client executives and 200 from marketing services companies were due to board the new P&O Cruisers superliner Aurora.

When the cruise was canceled, early arrivals such as Alan Rutherford, Unilever's global media director, were stranded in New York.
