MANILA--Japan's Casio Computer is shutting down its pager factory in the Philippines due to a slump in demand both here and abroad. In a statement, Casio said sales of pagers have dropped dramatically due to the rapid advances in cellular phone technology which have allowed features such as text messaging and mailbox services. Other Casio products such as calculators, watches, musical instruments, label printers, and cash registers will still be distributed in the Philippines.
"There is no intention to transfer (production) to another country," says Casio Personnel Manager Elmira Gramata. "Company officials have seen nothing negative in the local business environment. It's just that pagers have become nearly obsolete due to the increasing use of E-mail and cell-phones."
