U.S. Commerce Secretary William Daley announced that the Census Bureau will begin separately tracking e-commerce shortly, with the first statistics to be reported next year. Up to now, Internet sales have been tracked as part of catalog sales on official government statistics. Separately, Mr. Daley said U.S. officials have met with European Union officials and are hopeful of reaching agreement on Web privacy issues by June that would resolve concerns that U.S. Web sites might face limits on collecting or gathering data from EU countries.
