New Century Networks, New York, laid off seven of its 70-plus staffers Jan. 7 in a decision to put fewer resources behind its Newsworks home page. The effect on Newsworks will be mainly editorial, with fewer special sections and fewer updates of the site on weekends, said VP-Marketing Paul Kessinger. NCN's focus will now be more concentrated on the advertising network of 140 affiliate sites, the new free e-mail service and the development of the site as a navigation tool. NCN is owned by publishers Advance Publications, Cox Newspapers, Gannett Co., Hearst Corp., Knight-Ridder, New York Times Co., Times Mirror Co., Tribune Co. and Washington Post Co.
