DETROIT (AdAge.com) -- Chevron Corp., San Francisco, announced today that its shareholders have approved its merger with Texaco, White Plains, N.Y.

A spokesman at Chevron told AdAge.com that WPP Group's J. Walter Thompson USA, San Francisco, is developing creative to announce its $35 billion takeover of Texaco. He said the work falls under an existing contract with the agency.

JWT said its Brouillard Communications unit is handling. JWT, Houston, handles Shell Oil Co.; its London office has Shell's global account.

Separately, Phillips Petroleum Co., Bartlesville, Okla., said it has no plans for ads to announce its Sept. 17 acquisition of Tosco Corp., Old Greenwich., Conn. in a $7.36 billion stock deal.

Omnicom Group's DDB Worldwide, Dallas, handles Phillips' corporate account. Tosco is with Interpublic Group of Cos.' Dailey & Associates, West Hollywood, Calif.

Other acqusitions in the industry have resulted in ad agency consolidations.
