The American Advertising Federation conference kicked off in Tampa, Fla., Thursday with the Salute to AAF Achievers luncheon. In addition to the first Barton A. Cummings Gold Medal Award, shared by ad veterans James Fish and Donald Macdonald, these were among the awards given:
Sid Bernstein Communications Awards first-place honors in five divisions went to the Advertising Club of Greater Boston; the Birmingham Advertising Club; Tucson Advertising Club; Daytona Beach Advertising Federation; and Ad 2 Phoenix. G.D. Crain Jr. Memorial Awards for Public Service to the Advertising Club of Greater Boston; Birmingham Advertising Club; Madison Advertising Federation; Columbia Advertising & Marketing Foundation; and Ad 2 Honolulu. Club Management awards to the Houston Advertising Federation, Milwaukee Advertising Club, Topeka Advertising Federation, Charlotte Advertising Club and Ad 2 Atlanta. Government Relations awards to the Advertising Club of Louisville, Great Falls Advertising Federation, Tucson Advertising Club, Black Hills Advertising Federation and Ad 2 Phoenix.
Barclays Bank, the U.K.'s biggest bank, will launch an online shopping mall offering secure transactions using Netscape technology. Initially, eight U.K. retailers are tenants of BarclaySquare: the supermarket Sainsbury's (offering a seasonal selection of 40 wines); catalog retailer Argos; Toys 'R' Us; Eurostar (passenger train from London to Paris or Brussels via the Channel Tunnel); academic textbook retailer Blackwell's; student travel retailer Campus Travel; and The Car Shop, which provides consumers with information about new and used cars.
