(June 14, 2001) -- Tempus Group's CIA USA, a division of CIA Medianetwork, has won the media buying and planning account of Spartan Stores, Grand Rapids, Mich.

CIA won the business following a review with the incumbent shop, Blackwood Media Management, Rockford, Mich., and several other undisclosed shops. Billings are approximately $23 million.

Spartan Stores owns and operates 127 supermarkets and deep-discount drugstores in Michigan and Ohio, including Ashcraft's Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, Food Town and The Pharm. Spartan also distributes over 40,000 private label and national brand products to more than 350 independent grocery stores and serves as a wholesale distributor to 6,600 convenience stores. Spartan advertises in spot broadcast, outdoor and newspapers.

CIA has also entered into an alliance with Baltimore-based agency Trahan Burden & Charles. The media shop will partner with Trahan on media buying, planning and research services for Trahan's clients.

Trahan claims approximately $135 million in billings, and its client list includes The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition, Maryland Tourism, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Singapore Tourism Board, University of Maryland Medicine, the Baltimore Orioles, Provident Bank of Maryland, The Baltimore Sun and Harrah's Entertainment. -- Richard Linnett
