Clinton nominates Spielvogel ambassador to Slovak Republic

Published on .

President Clinton tapped veteran adman Carl Spielvogel, a longtime backer of the president, to be U.S. ambassador to the Slovak Republic. Mr. Spielvogel co-founded Backer & Spielvogel, New York, in 1979 and retired from the operation as chairman of Bates Worldwide in '94; soon after that, he became chairman-CEO of United Auto Group but resigned from the chain of used-car dealerships in '97. Mr. Spielvogel still faces Senate confirmation.
