OUT OF THE CLOSET, STILL IN THE NEWS

From the land of perception and reality, comes a new sort of reality.

Jann Wenner, founder of Rolling Stone and president of Wenner Media, has been in the cultural vanguard for 28 years. Now separated from his wife, Jane, and dating Calvin Klein designer Matt Nye, Mr. Wenner has revealed another side of himself.

As mainstream America wrestles with the issues surrounding homosexuality, Mr. Wenner appears to personally be addressing his own orientation.

"He could have been the poster boy of the '60s psychedelia and in the '80s the go-go capitalist," said Donny Deutsch, CEO of Deutsch, New York. "Now, ... he's dealing with society's sexual boundaries."

While the dissolution of Mr. Wenner's marriage to Jane could impact the company's operations, his personal life seems to be having little effect on advertisers.

Indeed, with Reality female condoms, Depo-Provera contraceptive injections, Ramses condoms and several AIDS awareness ads in the March 23 issue alone, it seems that sex isn't in the closet but in Rolling Stone.

"That's his personal life. It's not relevant," said a spokeswoman for Intel Corp., which had four ads in Rolling Stone late last year, through Dahlin Smith White, Salt Lake City.

"It's a non-issue generally, unless the publicity reflected negatively on the book itself," said David Martin, CEO of PentaCom, a unit of BBDO Worldwide, Detroit, which represents Chrysler/Plymouth and others.
