CMGI scales back ad revenue model

CMGI Chairman-CEO David Wetherell on Feb. 13 said the company is scaling back its advertising revenue model while concentrating on software licensing and e-commerce to focus the company on achieving profitability. Mr. Wetherell made the announcement during the Robertson Stephens Tech 2001 conference in San Francisco. Already, CMGI's portal AltaVista Co. moved from an advertising model to a software licensing model and establishing extranet indexes for companies. Mr. Wetherell added that "we think it will be another year or two until advertising shifts back." Mr. Wetherell said that CMGI will begin creating intranet indexes for customers by June.
