Cmp media, making its first major global move in online media, is getting ready to launch sites targeting resellers in 13 markets.

CMP and its partners will build local-language versions of ChannelWEB, a 2-year-old site targeting U.S. resellers of computer products. The password-protected site ( has more than 70,000 registered users.

CMP has licensed or developed 18 international editions of Computer Reseller News, the biggest U.S. reseller publication, over the past four years. Now it is following up with local versions of ChannelWEB.


CMP's global play comes as rivals make a concerted push into the category. International Data Group has 27 reseller publications and 15 reseller Web sites worldwide. Ziff-Davis is building a reseller franchise around startup Sm@rt Reseller, a print and online publication.

CMP has fielded various Web sites with mixed results; two key properties, TechWeb ( and CMPnet, remain in the shadow of rivals such as CNET and Ziff-Davis' ZDNet.

David Tyler, CMP VP-international licensing and online development, said ChannelWEB is CMP's most successful online property.

"CMP dominates in the [reseller] channel in the top markets," he said. "We're going to play to our strengths."

Mr. Tyler said the ChannelWEB move was conceived months ago and is not affected by CMP's decision to consider selling the entire company (AA, Feb. 15).

"We are full throttle," he said.

Working with partners, CMP by yearend intends to open ChannelWEB sites in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, the Middle East, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden and the U.K.
