Compaq names marketing chief

Compaq Computer Corp. on Wednesday named David B. Middleton to the new post of VP-marketing and communications, responsible for global communications, brand and distribution strategies. Mr. Middleton, 41, formerly was VP-worldwide marketing and fulfillment for IBM Corp.'s IBM Personal Computer Co., and earlier held marketing and general management posts at IBM and NEC Corp. The hiring marks the first time Compaq has put one executive in charge of global marketing.

Mr. Middleton will be part of a centralized marketing and sales group Compaq formed in October to oversee its five geographic sales regions. Jim Garrity, until now the de facto global communications chief, retains his title of VP-communications for North America.
