CompuServe moves E-Mall to Web

Published on .

CompuServe at long last is launching its Electronic Mall on the Web as part of its "Red Dog" move-to-Web initiative. While the move-to-Web is designed to offer exposure to CompuServe merchants, the online mall is not as large as it used to be. Last year, the online service reported 185 merchants; this year it touts just 85. The Web version of the mall will offer 65 stores, including Hammacher Schlemmer, J.C. Penney, Federal Express and Computer Express.

Managed by Gary Yeauger, senior business manager of merchandising and commerce, the store's Web launch was sponsored by marketers Omaha Steaks, FTD Florists, American Greetings' Gorant candies brand and Alle Fine Jewelers, which are each offering giveaways. Mr. Yeauger said giveaways and promotions will help bolster exposures to the new Web site, which is identical to the CompuServe version of the mall with the exception of the number of stores participating.
