Conde Nast launches titles in South Africa

Published on .

CAPE TOWN -- Conde Nast, in partnership with Independent Newspapers of Ireland, has established a South African joint venture, Conde Nast Independent Magazines, to publish local editions of Vogue, House & Garden, GQ and possibly other titles.

Managing director of the new venture is Liz Rees-Jones, who has extensive experience of magazine publishing in Britain. She is the wife of Ivan Fallon, chief executive of Independent's South African offshoot, Independent Newspapers Holdings, the biggest publisher of daily newspapers in this country. The first title, House & Garden, will go on sale early next year.

Independent Newspapers Holdings was last week barred from publishing magazines by a High Court judgment which enforced the terms of a 1985 restraint of trade agreement with another local publishing group, Caxton Limited. But the ruling does not appear to affect the Irish parent company.
