Contenders line up for 'New York' edit post

The surprise firing1 of New York Editor in Chief Kurt Andersen sparked a round of speculation in media circles about his successor. Among the names surfacing as candidates: Michael Kinsley, now at Slate; author/ columnist Pete Hamill; GQ media columnist Michael Gross; top New York Observer editors Peter Kaplan and Joe Conason; and Adam Moss, onetime editor of the defunct Seven Days. Newly named interim Editor Richard Babcock is expected to return to editing parent K-III's Chicago by yearend.
