Less than a year after being hired away from Sears, Roebuck & Co.'s top marketing post, AutoNation President John Costello has resigned "to pursue Internet business ventures,'' a company statement said today. Succeeding Mr. Costello is Michael Maroone, formerly president of AutoNation's Automotive Retail Group. The statement by AutoNation, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said Mr. Costello "decided to step down'' after the company's board voted to separate its automotive rental division from the company. The division includes Alamo Rent A Car, CarTemps USA and National Car Rental Systems. The board is exploring alternative ways to dispose of those businesses, the company said. Mr. Costello joined AutoNation Jan. 1, leaving his position as senior exec VP and general manager-marketing at Sears. At the time, AutoNation said he would be charged with building AutoNation, the nation's largest auto-dealership group, into a national brand. Mr. Costello also is chairman of the Association of National Advertisers.
