In July, the world's attention turned to Atlanta and magazine editors competed to see how many covers they could devote to the Summer Olympics. The Games earned a new Cover Story high for 1996, with 16 points on 11 covers, featuring past and present Olympians from Mary Lou Retton to the current U.S. Water Polo Team.

Other celebrities finishing in the top 10 for the month: Demi Moore, 7.5; Christie Brinkley, 7; Meg Ryan, 5.5; Sandra Bullock and Rosie O'Donnell, 5; "Independence Day" and Will Smith, 4.5; the crash of TWA Flight 800, 4; and Candace Cameron and Princess Di, tied at 3.5.
