MEDIA MAELSTROM: Of all the major marketing events measured over the past month, the launch of new TV news channels generated the greatest number of impressions among SPINdex's sample of influential media outlets. Fueled by a vicious battle between News Corp. and Time Warner over Fox News Channel's access to Time Warner's New York cable system, the story generated 60 news stories and 56,292 words of copy for a SPINdex of 558.

Coming in a close second was the introduction of TV Internet-access device WebTV, which garnered 67 stories and 65,295 words of copy, for a SPINdex of 550.

The controversy surrounding liquor ads on TV was the topic of 31 news stories, 41,544 words of copy, and 1.5 minutes of national TV time, for a SPINdex of 444. Hype surrounding Warner Bros.' `'Space Jam" scored 25 news stories and a SPINdex of 202. And the initial public offering of Wired Ventures earned 10 news stories and a SPINdex of 89.
