Danone takes stake in Lifeway Foods

Lifeway Foods, Morton Grove, Ill., marketer of the cultured dairy product known as kefir and other food items, said it sold a 15% equity stake to France's Danone Groupe, through Danone's U.S. subsidiary, for about $5 million. Lifeway said the funds will allow it to significantly increase advertising and marketing efforts. Lifeway said it markets 12 flavors of kefir and exports the product to Eastern Europe. It recently entered the soy milk market with Soytreat, which it said is the first non-dairy soy kefir in the U.S.
