Published on .

(Aug. 15, 2001) -- The U.S. Department of Defense selected five finalists for its $20 million Joint Recruitment account, according to executives close to the review.

Incumbent Cordiant Communications Group's Bates Worldwide, New York, is defending the account against Bcom3 Group's D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, New York; Interpublic Group of Cos. shops Foote, Cone & Belding, New York, and Mullen, Wenham, Mass.; and WPP Group's J. Walter Thompson, Atlanta.

More than a dozen contenders had responded to the two-phase request for proposal.

A decision is expected in October as the current contract with Bates expires at the end of September. Consultant Jones Lundin Beals, Chicago, referred calls to the client. -- Kate MacArthur
