SAO PAULO--DirecTV Brasil has added two local channels to its direct-to-home satellite service: the fourth-ranked broadcast network TV Bandeirantes and Canal 21, well-known for its news coverage.

DirecTV does not carry the top three broadcasters -- TV Globo, SBT and TV Record -- but is trying to increase its selection of broadcast channels.

"The addition of open channels has been a longtime request from our subscribers and a concern of DirecTV," says Galaxy Brasil President Milton Torres.

Globo's parent is an investor in the competing DTH service Sky Brasil and refuses to allow Galaxy's DirecTV to carry its signal. Galaxy and Sky are locked in a similar battle in Mexico, where Televisa (another Sky investor) will not allow DirecTV in Mexico to carry its four broadcast networks.
