Discover launches virtual card for online usage

Discover, the credit card division of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co., launched its take on virtual credit cards designed for e-commerce. The Discover Deskshop program generates a single-use number for card members so their actual account number never goes to the Internet retailer; that number then becomes exclusive to the merchant where it was used, so recurring charges can be billed to the same number, the company said. The system also creates an online order history for a card member's reference.
