Discovery buys sole control of CBS Eye on People cable net

Bethesda, Md.-based Discovery Communications said it completed its acquisition of the CBS Eye on People cable TV channel Dec. 29 and will own 100% of the channel rather than operate it as a joint venture with CBS as originally planned. ``Given the realities of the dynamic, ever evolving cable programming marketplace, we did not think it made sense to co-manage a netowrk,'' said Discovery Networks U.S. President Johnathan Rodgers.

The network will be renamed Discovery People and will continue its existing focus on reality-based programming about people and personalities. It is currently available to 11 million cable and satellite subscribers. The new name and logo are scheduled for an on-air debut Jan. 11.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed, although CBS Cable President Donald Mitzner said CBS would realize a financial gain on the transaction.

Discovery is jointly owned by Tele-Communications Inc. division Liberty Media Corp., Cox Communications, Advance/Newhouse Communications and Discovery founder and Chairman-CEO John S. Hendricks.
