Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole, speaking to Hollywood studio executives Tuesday, accused the film and movie industry of hiding "behind the lofty language of free speech in order to profit from the debasing of America" and called on them to produce "films and music and television that help us raise our families instead of hurting us." At a meeting with executives held on the lot of 20th Century Fox, Mr. Dole also offered a little praise and reviewed the movie "Independence Day," calling it "a high-tech thriller about patriotism and humankind at its best..
