Drkoop.com shuts Austin, Texas, office, lays off 45

Published on .

In a move to further streamline its operations, health site Dr. Koop.com said it was closing its Austin, Texas, facility and consolidating its headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif. In addition, the company said it would locate some sales and business development staff in the Philadelphia area. The closing will result in about 45 people being laid off in Austin, which primarily focused on internal product development. The company, which said the moves would reduce total cash expenses to under $1 million per month, said it would focus more on creating alliances with "highly qualified and trusted partners" that would help diversify its revenue streams to licensing and subscription fees.
