ISTANBUL--Sales of DVDs (digitalvideo discs) in Turkey are taking importersby surprise. Turkish consumer electronicsmanufacturer Raks Satis ve Pazarlama A.S.has sold around 24,000 DVD movies - producedby Warner Bros, Buena Vista and their affiliate companies and imported from Germany -since testmarketing them in September 1998.It is now increasing its orders. Recently,Palermo, an Istanbul based consumer electronics marketer, began importing DVDs producedby Colombia.
The number of DVDs in the market is estimated to be around 250,000, representingsales worth $11 million. Raks executivesbelieve the current growth rate of themarket signals that the DVD industry willbe the biggest expansion in home entertainment. In 1998, 4,000 DVD players were sold,at a cost of between $850 and $1,700. Thisfigure is expected to reach 15,000 in 1999.
