MANILA--The first Philippine auction Web site,PhilAuctions.com, has been launched, patterned after eBay of the U.S.

PhilAuctions will serve as a venue for Filipinos who want to go online to buy and sell goods ranging from microwave ovens to Evangelical tapes, according to an official at AK-Asia Services Corp., which runs the Web site.

The Web site is receiving an average of 50,000 hits a day. "The reception to the Web site has been very positive," said the official. "Although it's a new site, we've been able to move a lot of items."

The hottest items currently being auctioned are Star Wars action figures, in line with the movie The Phantom Menace currently being shown in Manila, according to the official.

PhilAuctions charges a listing fee for items to be auctioned and likewise gets a percentage of each sale.

PhilAuctions is planning to launch a major national advertising campaign to boost awareness for the site.
