EC gives green light to U.K. digital interactive service

Published on .

BRUSSELS--The European Commission has approved the establishment of U.K. digital interactive-TV service British Interactive Broadcasting, following earlier concerns that the U.K.'s digital TV services market would not be open to competition.

Open, the venture's new name, will allow businesses such as banks, supermarkets and travel agencies to interact directly with viewers. Other services include online games, educational programs, sports and entertainment.

Open's investors are BSkyB, BT, HSBC Bank and Matsushita Electric Europe.
