EC investigates how telcos treats ISPs

Published on .

The European Commission has opened four separate investigations into telecommunications companies that also act as Internet service providers. BT (British Telecommunications), France Telecom, Deutche Telecom and Belgacom (Belgium) have been asked to provide information about their Internet activities amid suspicions that these four might be discriminating against independent service providers that rely on their infrastructure.

The investigations were not prompted by complaints, as is usually the case. "These are all own-initiative cases," according to an EC official. Replies to the Commission's questions are due in at the beginning of February, however none had replied by Jan. 31.
